5 movies for the new semester

The summer is over soon, at least the vacation, and a new semester is upon us. If you are going back to school, back to work or at the beginning of your education, we can all use a bit of motivation and inspiration. Take this Sunday (here it’s quite grey, so I’m using the weather as an excuse to stay inside) and check out one of these movies. They are all chuck full of inspiration for working hard, and there are of course some amazing fashion bits as well.

1. Mona Lisa Smile

A given on such a list; these lovely ladies at Wellesley are over achieving impersonated. They look amazing (the 50’s huh?), finish all required reading before the first class of the semester and all with perfectly applied red lipstick. The movie stars Julia Roberts, Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Ginnifer Goodwin, to mention a few. This movie really inspires me to do well at academics, but also to realize how lucky we are to have all the opportunities we have as women of the 21st century.

2. Dead Poets Society

This is a beautiful, but also heartbreakingly sad movie. Robin Williams does one of his best performances (in my opinion) as the energetic and alternative English teacher John Keating. He inspires his students, the boys at the elite prep school Welton Academy, to focus on the idea of seizing the day – carpe diem. The young students are portrayed by Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke Josh Charles among others. Both Leonard and Hawke does an impeccable job at portraying boys becoming men, and the prep school feeling creates a wonderful backdrop for this surprisingly serious and dark story.

3. The Devil Wears Prada

Yes, of course. After the two first suggestions we needed something more up to date, non? This movie is infamous, and I think everyone watching it will get a feeling of being able to do more – because at least, we’re not working for Miranda Priestly! I mentioned this movie some Sundays back in my list of beauty filled movies. The fashion and beauty inspiration in this movie is real, and it sure gets me focused and ready to tackle a new semester.

4. Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban

Really any Harry Potter movie would do, because Hermione brings the school spirit every time. But in this one, stuff get serious. I mean, she time travels to get to all of her classes! That is a girl with strong work ethics, and determination. Emma Watson also does a good job at portraying strong studious fashion game in Perks of Being a Wallflower, but that movie might be a bit dark for this list…

5. The Gilmore Girls

Actually not a movie, but a TV-show that I love and re-watch all the time. Rory Gilmore is so hard working that I feel like a slacker compared to her. I really find motivation in the way she never complains about her work load, and I love her Chilton days equally as much as her Yale days (except for when Logan comes into the picture, because frankly, her work ethics kind of go out the window at that point…) I love the episode where she’s revising for finals and her kitchen table is covered in textbooks and notebooks – because then she can switch from one subject to the next within fifteen minutes, to get the most out of her brains attention span. Also, she wears a lot of nice, and comfortable outfits.
